Southern Indiana Classic

I ran the Southern Indiana Classic Half-Marathon on 4/10/2011 in 2hrs 13minutes a personal record for me. I had signed up for and trained for a full-marathon but race officials cancelled the full-marathon due to heat and humidity.
It was a hilly and challenging course. The only time I almost stopped and walked was around the nine mile mark. At that point we were running into some really strong headwinds. This is the second year for the Southern Indiana Classic. I hope this race continues in the future, overall it is a very good race but there are some organizational issues. The race started late, they cancelled the full marathon due to heat and humidity but could not get the event off on time. They had 16 water stations over 13.1 miles but the first water stations were at the 3-mile mark. The first porta-potties were at 6.2 (10K) miles, they needed to have some earlier. No time callers and no clocks along the route. Only RC products, beer and caffeinated water to drink at the festival following the race, every other race I have been to has tubs of bottled water scattered around all over the place.

  1. Nice job pushing through. I would be quite upset if I trained for a marathon and had it cancelled on me. Was it really that hot that they couldn't go on with it, or was it because the race organizers were not prepared? Good job!

  2. Good job, Art. I did a 5k/10k mud run a few years ago in April. We had record heat over 100 degrees and the sponsor ran out of water! Needless to say, nobody was happy. Now I'm training for my first half marathon in June. Wish me luck!
